PNEUMATIC SKID STEER TIRES

Skid steer loaders are the jack of all trades for compact equipment machines. This versatility however can presents a tire selection challenge.

Tires are the most expensive consumable item on a skid steer loader, so it pays to due a little tire research before shopping. Choosing the correct tire for the application will maximize your machine's performance, and minimize your tire investment. But, don't assume one tire fits all applications. Many operators may find it best to have several tire options and select the best tire for the application.

For example, you wouldn't want to run pneumatic tires in a scrap yard full of flat-causing metal debris, nor would you run a solid skid steer tire in loose material. 

R4 Tread

Most versatile, least expensive

• Ideal in snow & ice

SOLID SKID STEER TIRES

There are two types of solid skid steer tires including press-on rubber tire assemblies and molded solid tire assemblies.

1 - SOLID PRESS-ON ASSEMBLIES

Wheel and tire are separate components

• Easier to dispose of the steel and the rubber when consumed. The rubber and steel is easily separated for recycling.
• Rubber can be replaced with an industrial press, reusing the steel wheel
• Can choose either smooth or traction rubber on the same wheel minimizing tire wear for the application

2 - SOLID MOLDED ASSEMBLIES

Wheel and tire are one component and can not be changed independently

• Usually less expensive
• Can have more usable rubber
• Disposal is a problem and rubber and metal wheel can not be easily separated

SOLID PNEUMATICS VS. PNEUMATIC

• Solids: Reduce downtime due to flats (airless tires)
• Solids: For safety (no tire blowouts)

BACKHOE TIRE CONSIDERATIONS

Ply Ratings

Construction tires are subject to heavy abuse. Ply rating is important for long term usage and a heavy ply will provide:

• Better puncture resistance
• Longer service duty
• Sidewall protection is typically heavier and resists cutting

Tread Pattern

Try and match your tread pattern to your application.

• I3 - specialty pattern with good flotation
• F3 - steer tire for road usage
• R4 - general service and loose material
• L4/L5 - better for asphalt use
• Radial - radial for asphalt use than bias

Sidewall Protection

Are your tires wearing out or damaged by impacts?

• Choose a heavier ply
• Select tires with stronger sidewalls

WHAT IS A TELEHANDLER?

Telehandlers are widely used in the construction, commercial installation and film industry. They function much like a forklift but is more a crane than forklift, with the increased versatility of a telescopic boom that can extend forwards from the vehicle.
