Basic Principle
During metals corrosion in water, we could see a distinctive feature in its mechanism, i.e. corrosion takes place in anodic area instead of the cathode area.
Cathode protection with impressed current makes use of this principle to protect the surface of ship iron and steel. By means of applying protective current to the iron and steel to be protected, the cathode will be polarized and the current will be larger, the electron will be accumulated more and more on the cathode surface, and the negative potential value will be added. When the potential reach a certain degree, the iron and steel surface will reach equal potential, and the micro battery of corrosion disappears. Meanwhile, the iron and steel corrosion is inhibited. The cathode protection with impressed current for ship body is an anti-corrosion technology using DC power equipped on the ship, and auxiliary anode assembled on the ship to apply protective current to the ship body, which then becomes cathode for protection.
