W-Beam to Thrie-Beam Transitions
For longitudinal barriers, it is common practice to use a standard W-beam guardrail along the required highway segments and to use a stiffened thrie-beam guardrail in a transition region near the end of a bridge. As a result of the differences in rail geometries, a W-beam-to-thrie-beam transition element is typically used to connect and provide continuity between the two rail sections.
W-Beam to Thrie-Beam to structure transitions are typically used and specified in guardrail terminations to bridges, concrete abutments, concrete structures and crash cushions.

Thrie-beam guardrail is a stronger version of the w-beam guardrail systems. The additional corrugation in the thrie-beam rail stiffens the system, making it less prone to damage during low- and moderate-speed vehicle impacts.
The higher mounting of the thriebeam rail, increases its ability to contain vehicles larger than standard passenger cars under some impact conditions.
