What is the working principle of a car water pump?
1. The engine drives the bearings and impeller of the water pump through the pulley, and the coolant inside the pump is driven by the impeller to rotate together. Under the action of centrifugal force, it is thrown to the edge of the water pump casing, while generating a certain pressure, and then flows out from the outlet or water pipe. In the centre of the impeller, as the coolant is thrown out, the pressure drops and the coolant in the tank is sucked into the impeller through the water pipe under the pressure difference between the pump inlet and the centre of the impeller, realising the reciprocating cycle of the coolant.
2. The bearings supporting the pump shaft are lubricated with grease, so the coolant should be prevented from leaking into the grease and causing grease emulsification, and the grease should be prevented from leaking. Sealing measures to prevent pump leakage include water seals and gaskets. The water seal dynamic seal ring and shaft are installed between the impeller and bearing through interference fit, and the water seal static seal seat is pressed tightly on the water pump casing to seal the coolant;
3. The water pump casing is connected to the engine through a gasket to support the bearings and other moving parts. There is also a drainage hole in the water pump casing, located between the water seal and the bearing. Once coolant leaks through the water seal, it can be drained through the drainage hole to prevent coolant from entering the bearing cavity and destroying the lubrication of the bearings, causing corrosion of the components. If coolant still leaks out after the engine has stopped, the water seal has been damaged.
